Latics Partner With N Care

29 April 2023

Today, North Care Charity are our charity matchday partner.

The club has worked closely with Northcare over the past few seasons to help support each other on various initiatives, including the children’s hospital visit this Christmas.

We are the NHS charity that makes a difference by funding innovative equipment, education, research and wellbeing support across Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. We support staff to deliver outstanding care to over a million patients and their families every year in Oldham, Bury, Rochdale and Salford.

We are working with our Children’s Services at Royal Oldham Hospital to kick-start a fundraising campaign so we can go above and beyond for our children with complex needs, learning disabilities, mental health needs and end-of-life care. With more funding, we’ll be able to create spaces across the hospital that accommodate their needs and improve their patient experience.

Meet Tricia Gilbert, our wonderful Senior Support Worker on the Paediatric Elective Surgery Unit at Royal Oldham Hospital.

Tricia has been working in Children’s Services for 12 years and understands the impact that sensory equipment and a designated space can have when treating children with additional needs.

“Coming into hospital is a worrying time for anyone, regardless of age or additional needs, but this worry can be amplified for children with additional needs. They sometimes experience ‘information overload’ in new, unfamiliar surroundings, and ‘sensory overload’ from the noise on the Unit and the physical observations they have from clinicians.

“Some patients can become distressed, upset, and frustrated by this, and a sensory room would give them a calmer experience in hospital. Parents have also commented when they have been with their children that a sensory room would be an excellent addition to the department and very welcomed by many.”

Tricia is completing her own ‘Steps for Sensory’ fundraising challenge throughout April and challenging herself to walk 400,000 steps, all to raise funds for their new sensory room on the ward at Royal Oldham Hospital.
