Latics 1-1 Bromley

30 April 2023

Peter Clarke played his final game in an Oldham Athletic shirt as Latics drew 1-1 with Bromley at Boundary Park.

Oldham dominated the opening periods of the game, and went ahead just before half-time when Joe Nuttall ran round Reice Charles-Cook and fired the ball into the net.

David Unsworth’s side continued to look for a second, only being denied by some great saves from Charles-Cook.

Peter Clarke came on in place of Mike Fondop with 15 minutes to go, spending the last spell of the game upfront alongside Alex Reid.

James Vennings equalised for the visitors with ten minutes to go, as his long-range strike beat Norman.

Oldham started the game on the front foot, and had an early chance when Kitching’s cross zinged across the 6-yard box, being met by the outstretched leg of Nuttallm who couldn’t diver it goalwards.

If that was a good chance, then the two on the stroke of the half-hour mark amazing chances.

Fondop was denied by Charles-Cook when his head met the ball with thunderous power from a handful of yards out, before Green’s follow-up was headed off the line by Fisher.

Athletic won a free-kick before the interval, Fondop and Shelton stood over it, but it was Shelts this time who took it, forcing the Bromley goalkeeper into making another good save.

A deserved goal did come for the home side just before half-time, Dan Gardner picked out the advancing Nuttall with a great pass, who took the ball past the goalkeeper in no man's land, before beating defender Webster with a fantastic finish into the far corner.

Ben Tollitt came on in place of Hallam Hope at half-time, as Latics looked for a second.

Unsworth’s substitute appeared to have done just that on the hour-mark, Fondop played Tollitt through, after being on the receiving end of a crunching tackle, leaving him with just the ‘keeper to beat, but his dinked effort was saved by Charles-Cook, and Bromley cleared.

Alex Reid came on in place of the tiring Dan Gardner with 20 to go, but the only substitute anyone cared about was that of a certain centre-back.

With 15 minutes to go, Peter Clarke came on to a rapturous applause from the 7,000 fans inside Boundary Park, and was sent up front by manager David Unsworth.

Sporting a pair of white boots, he wasted no time getting stuck in, winning back possession of the ball in the final third.

Bromley spoiled Clarkey’s party when James Vennings’ found the bottom corner from the edge of the box with a powerful and precise strike, his first of the season.

Latics didn’t give up though, Clarke gave the ball to Shelton inside the area, who unleashed a dangerous effort, forcing a corner.

Despite Oldham’s best efforts, they couldn’t find a winner, meaning the season, and Peter Clarke’s time at Boundary Park, ended with a draw.
