Latics 1-2 Halifax

15 August 2023

A disappointing night for Latics at Boundary Park, as Halifax took home the points thanks to a 2-1 victory.

The visitors took the lead when Rob Harker beat Hudson with a long range strike.

David Unsworth’s side responded just before the break, Dickenson’s corner was headed back across the face of goal by Raglan, before Shelton smashed in from close-range.

Latics looked to take the lead in the second half, and created a number of chances, but that elusive goal never came.

The visitors secured the three points following a scramble in the box, when Adam Senior bundled the ball over the line.

The opening 15 minutes consisted of both sides feeling out the game, not really creating anything of note.

But Latics soon changed that, with most attacks coming down the left hand side involving Mark Kitching.

The best of the chances involving Kitching came when he advanced down the wing, and fired in a cross-turn-shot, which nearly caught out the ‘keeper, Sam Johnson, who tipped it behind for a corner.

Rob Harker’s brilliant long range effort beat the Latics defence and Mat Hudson on the stroke of the half-hour mark.

Sheron tried his own shot from outside the box, although his wasn’t successful, only winning a corner thanks to a deflection.

Latics did get their equaliser, and it was more than deserved.

It started from the aforementioned corner, Dickenson swung it in towards the far post, Raglan got a touch to it and managed to steer it back into play, before Shelton fired home from six yards out.

The opening ten minutes of the second half saw Athletic on the front foot, but they just couldn’t make the most of their chances.

Halifax came into the second half, had their spell in charge, and got their second goal when Adam Senior bundled the ball over the line following a scramble.

Latics piled on the pressure, bringing on Mike Fondop and Alex Reid, looking to rescue a point in the dying moments of the game.

But despite a number of crosses and long balls, it was to no avail, and the visitors went home with the points.
