Boreham Wood 0-0 Latics

26 August 2023

Latics picked up their first clean sheet of the season following a 0-0 draw away at Boreham Wood.

Oldham started with attacking intent, Green winning a series of corners.

Boreham Wood came into the game, looking to create chances, but didn’t produce much of note.

Moving into the second-half, both teams looked for an opener, Lee Ndlovu’s header forced Hudson to make a superb save, before Norwood’s poked shot hit the crossbar, but neither found the back of the net.

Latics entered today’s fixture having made one change from Saturday’s draw away at Chesterfield, as Devarn Green returned from injury in place of Kurt Willoguby, with Latics lining up in a similar shape.

Green’s return to action saw him have an instant impact, with the winger rushing down the left-flank, winning a corner as his cross was blocked.

Ndlovu, who bagged twice in this fixture last season, turned on the edge of the area, looking for the far corner with his shot, but it wasn’t enough to trouble Hudson.

Hudson found Norwood with a long and powerful ball, the striker raced through, shot on goal, with Ashmore getting his hands to it, seeing it bounce behind him, before turning around and recovering, to make the save.

Raglan had some defending to do as Whelan’s cross came in, the defender read the path of the cross, and rose highest to divert it away from the waiting Boreham Wood players.

Green showcased his attacking talents once more, his pace left the full-back in the dust, before he picked out Nuttall at the far post, but Devarn’s cross was just a tad high for Joe to do anything meaningful from it.

As Latics entered the second-half, Unsworth made a substitution, as Mike Fondop replaced Joe Nuttall.

Ndlovu continued to cause Latics problems, he used his height and strength to head the ball on for Tom Whelan, who shanked his shot from a few yards out.

His biggest contribution probably came a few moments later, as he made contact with Chris Bush’s deep cross via his head, looking to have scored an almost certain goal, just for Hudson to tip it over the bar.

Just after the hour-mark, Green made way for Gardner, having played all the minutes he could following his return from injury.

Dickenson sought to emulate his first strike against Aldershot when he got on the end of a loose ball 30 yards outside the box, but sharp shot-stopper Ashmore, was equal to it.

Oldham had the chance to nick all three points at the end, Dickenson fired in a cross, which Norwood looked to divert past the goalkeeper with a slight touch, but he could only find the underside of the crossbar.

A good point on the road for Latics, in a game they’ll feel they could have got more.

Oldham: Hudson, Kitching, Hogan, Shelton, Nuttall (Fondop, 45), Sheron, Green (Gardner, 64), Raglan, Dickenson, Freeman, Norwood.

Subs not used: Hobson, Willoughby, Reid.

Attendance: 1,208
