Latics 0-2 Solihull

28 August 2023

Latics fell to defeat at home to Solihull Moors thanks to two second half goals.

Oldham created a number of chances in the opening periods of the game, before Mike Fondop saw red for a second bookable offence.

That changed the game, and allowed Solihull to come into it, getting their first early in the second half.

With Oldham chasing an equaliser, the visitors claimed a second in stoppage time.

Latics started the game brightly, Hogan played a ball over the top for Willoughby, but Kurt couldn’t find the target.

Moors shot stopper, Simkin, fumbled Kitching’s cross, surprising Reid, who awkwardly volleyed the ball over.

The best chance came ten minutes later, Sutton did brilliantly to get past two men on the flank, he picked out Shelton in the centre, who couldn’t convert from 6 yards out.

The game turned when Mike Fondop was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving Latics with ten men for the remaining 65 minutes.

Hogan attempted an audacious overhead kick in stoppage time, and it very nearly worked out for him, with his effort going just wide of the post.

The interval saw David Unsworth make two changes, Brennan Dickenson, still recovering from Saturday’s game, came on in place of Mark Shelton, and Devarn Green replaced Kurt Willoughby.

Despite being a man down, Oldham came out in the second half on the front foot, looking for an opening goal.

Unsworth’s side produced some nice passing play, eventually releasing Kitching down the left, whose cross was turned behind before it reached the advancing Green.

The visitors took the lead through their number 9, Mark Beck. Maycock worked himself into a good position, and squared the ball for Beck, who had the easy task of tapping the ball home.

Latics had to respond, and Unsworth did, bringing on James Norwood for the last half-hour in place of former Moors striker Alex Reid.

That goal shocked Athletic, and it took them around ten minutes to adjust, but once they did, they looked like good candidates for an equaliser.

Simkin had a lot of work to do in the closing 20 minutes of play, he had to deny Norwood from the edge of the box, before he palmed away his bullet header from close range.

Gardner, making his first start of the season, was a real asset in the Athletic midfield, he looked to play through Green with a deadly pass, but just as it was about to reach Devarn, the hosts intercepted and cleared.

As Latics chased an equaliser, Solihull went up the other end and got a second through Josh Kelly.
