Latics vs. Maidstone United

18 February 2023

Latics play the fourth home game in succession with the visit of Maidstone United to Boundary Park.

David Unsworth’s side will be looking to build on the good run of form shown since the turn of the year, which has included three league wins so far.

It’s part of busy run of games for Latics, who will face three away games on the bounce before the end of the month.

The opposition

Maidstone currently occupy bottom place in the National League after a difficult run of results in recent months.

They did occupy a healthy mid-table spot but have struggled for form since November. Promoted as champions of the National League South, they are currently eight points adrift of safety.

Results have improved under interim management of former Latics defender George Elokobi, including a draw in their previous league game against Yeovil and a 4-0 win at Eastleigh last weekend.

The Stones’ last six

Eastleigh 0-4 Maidstone, FA Trophy

Yeovil 2-2 Maidstone

Maidstone 0-3 Aldershot

Maidstone 2-3 Wrexham

Notts County 2-2 Maidstone (5-6 on pens), FA Trophy

York 4-1 Maidstone

Watch out for

Jack Barham is Maidstone’s leading goalscorer with eight goals so far this season.

His goals return has accelerated further in recent weeks as the team’s results have improved.

The former Barnet and Dorking striker helped fire the Stones to promotion last season and has continued in similar form this campaign.

In the dugout

Former Latics defender George Elokobi is in interim charge of the Stones following the departure of Hakan Hayrettin.

The defender played 24 times for Latics during a playing career which also included time at Wolves and Colchester.

He was part of the coaching team at the Gallagher Stadium before stepping up last month.

Match officials

The match will be officiated by Scott Simpson, with Oliver Noonan and Jonathan Wyatt assisting him. Adewunmi Soneye will be the Fourth Official.
