Latics 2-0 Maidstone

18 February 2023

Latics climbed up to 15th in the table thanks to a 2-0 win over basement boys Maidstone United.

David Unsworth’s side came into the game looking to make amends for conceding two late goals against Gateshead on Valentine’s Day.

Mark Shelton opened the scoring for Oldham, he beat Stones ‘keeper Dan Barden from outside the box.

Neither side created any more chances of note, until the away side piled on the pressure in the last few minutes, which led to Latics hitting them on the counter, and Alex Reid scoring his second goal in as many games.

Latics created some chances in the opening moments, John Rooney showcased his excellent passing ability, with a great diagonal ball, which the Maidstone keeper got to seconds before Tollitt.

Tollitt cut in from the left-flank and went for goal, with his effort landing on the roof of the net.

Mark Kitching was fouled as he advanced down the left-wing, winning Latics a free-kick. Tollitt played a short pass to Shelton, who shifted towards the centre and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the area, beating Barnham at the near post.

Latics couldn’t build on that goal after 20 minutes, with no real chances being created by either side as the half-time whistle went.

Devarn Green came on in place of Tollitt in the second-half, making his Latics debut after signing from Telford yesterday.

He had a bright start, beating a man to put himself in a good crossing position, which couldn’t be turned into a goal.

Goalscorer Shelton came off just after the hour-mark, being replaced by Dan Garnder, as he was against York.

There was a minor penalty appeal as Green went down in the area, but it wasn’t contested strongly enough, and the referee awarded Latics a corner.

Gardner picked up a knock and was replaced by Ellis Chapman with five minutes to go, as Maidstone looked to find an equaliser.

Capitalising on their lack of defence, Nathan Sheron nabbed the ball off Maidstone, saw Reid making a run to his left and made the pass.

Reid calmly set up his shot from outside the box, and finished past the ‘keeper to secure the points for Latics.

Subs not used: Hudon, Abraham.
