Latics 1-3 Gateshead

14 January 2023

Latics exited the FA Trophy at the hands of Gateshead.

Kamil Conteh put the away side ahead after a quarter of an hour, his strike from the edge of the box beat Norman.

Veteran Peter Clarke equalised at the back post from Couto’s corner, to put the score level going into the break.

Gateshead won the tie with two late goals from Robbie Tinkler and Greg Olley.

The Heed took the lead when Conteh found space outside the box, and fired home early in the first-half.

Mike Fondop looked to equalise moments later, he turned on the edge of the box and got a shot away, which went wide of the post.

Couto swung in a corner, with the ball evading everyone bar Clarke at the back post who smashed the ball over the line.

Both teams were affected by the heavy rain which came down on the pitch during the second-half, as Ben Tollitt came on in place of Couto.

Tollitt had an instant impact, making key passes and putting crosses in, but none resulted in a decent chance.

Olley did well to find space on the edge of the area, and Norman did well to get down and push it past the post.

Gateshead went ahead when Campbell’s shot deflected off Mark Kitching with five minutes to go.

Peter Clarke was sent off amid the Latics players’ protests, for two bookable offences.

Olley sealed the win for the away side as the 90th minute approached, with a nice finish with the outside of his boot.

Oldham: Norman, Hogan, Sheron, Fondop (Reid 73), Kitching, Peck (Abraham 45), Couto (Tollitt 60), Chapman, P. Clarke, Yarney, Nuttall.

Attendance: 2,228 (100)
