Norman Ahead Of Southport Trip

13 July 2023

Magnus Norman can’t wait for the start of the new season after so far enjoying a good pre-season with the new lads in the team.

The goalkeeper only missed four games in the league last campaign and was one of Latics most consistent performers, which he hopes to carry over in to the upcoming 23/24 season.

“You can see the quality already that they bring to the team,” he said. “They’re good lads and it’s good to have them in. They’re great to have in the squad and will definitely help us this season.

“I was gutted to miss the four games I missed last year, but I can’t wait for the start of the season I’m looking forward to it.”

As a player who had his breakthrough season on an initial one-month loan at Southport in 2016, Magnus is excited to return there for the fixture this Saturday. Whilst he was there, he played 25 games before being described as a key player and having his loan extended to the end of the campaign.

He added: “I’m really looking forward to it. That was probably my first proper season in men’s football, and I really enjoyed it. I learnt a lot there as a young player and I’m looking forward to going back again.

“I have a lot of good memories there. They helped my development as a player massively whilst I was there.”

Magnus has been enjoying a challenging pre-season so far, completing the challenge of the Saddleworth Three Peaks last week with the rest of the squad. He also has positive feelings on how prepared the team are in the weeks counting down to their first league game.

“Three Peaks was really good I enjoyed it,” he reflected. “I used to do a lot of walking when I was at Carlisle so that was something that I really liked doing.

“Pre-season so far has been really good. It’s been great being back in and the lads are looking sharp.”

After the mid-table finish last season Magnus believes Oldham can build on this and experience a positive campaign this year. He also thrives in the added pressure of Latics being up there with the favourites for promotion this year.

He said: “It’s definitely motivating. That’s the aim every season regardless of what people are saying but I think there probably is a bit more pressure this year because we are one of the bigger clubs in the league.

“It puts pressure on the lads but doesn’t make it any more difficult for us as long as we stick to how we play in our own game then I think we’ll be alright.”
