Southport 1-1 Latics

15 July 2023

Oldham Athletic continued their preparations for the 2023/24 National League season with a 1-1 draw against Southport.

Latics started the game with a strong XI, with new signings Shaun Hobson, Charlie Raglan and Josh Lundstram, and Kurt Willoughby featuring, in addition to Dan Ward, who made his Latics debut.

Mark Kitching had the best chance of a rather uneventful first-half, as he advanced forward and looked for the far corner, missing by a few inches.

David Unsworth brought on a number of substitutes during the second-half, and broke the deadlock on 70 minutes when Devarn Green ran through and tucked away a great finish, before the hosts equalised with six minutes to go.

Former Sandgrounder, Green, was cynically tackled by the hosts early on in the game, winning Latics a free-kick in a dangerous position, but Latics failed to create a goalscoring opportunity from it.

Nuttall went close within ten minutes after being fed the ball by Willoughby, his effort skimming the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Lundstram demonstrated his great passing ability with a superb ball from deep, which was bravely defended by the hosts.

Tyler Walton tried his luck from a long way out, and nearly found the bottom corner.

Latics continued to look for an opener, with Willoughby and Nuttall having shots blocked or seeing them go wide.

On the stroke of the hour, Nuttall was sent off for an off the ball incident which saw him raise his arm to a Southport player.

Moments later, Green scored his fourth goal in a Latics shirt, dispossessing the Port before running through the defence and finishing with ease past the ‘keeper.

Just after the goal, Unsworth made a number of substitutions, as Sutton, Couto, Tollitt, Shelton, and Reid came on in place of Raglan, Kitching, Green, Sheron and Willoughby.

With seven minutes of normal time to play, Southport swung in a ball which was met by Declan Evans and saved by Mat Hudson, before Adam Anson bundled the ball over the line.

Deep into stoppage time, Mark Shelton was fortunate enough to receive the ball inside the box, but fired it over in what proved to be the last kick of the game.

Latics: Norman (Hudson, 45), Kitching (Couto, 70), Raglan (Sutton, 70), Hogan, Hobson, Ward (Hope, 45), Lundstram, Sheron (Shelton 70), Green, Willoughby (Reid 70), Nuttall.
