Chorley 1-6 Latics

19 July 2023

Oldham Athletic picked up the pace in pre-season with a superb 6-1 win over Chorley as they prepare for the start of the 23/24 National League season.

Latics started with a strong XI, with new signings Shaun Hobson and Charlie Raglan starting once again, with Josh Lundstram, Dan Ward and Kurt Willoughby featuring later in the game.

After going 1-0 down early in the first half, Alex Reid fights back, assisting Mike Fondop after a brilliant piece of dribbling play for the first goal and then knocking one in himself before half time.

The goals kept on coming in the second half, with Reid and Fondop both scoring a brace. The other two were scored by the effective substitutes of Devarn Green and Kurt Willoughby who scored with his first touch of the ball, bagging his first goal in a Latics shirt.

Alex Reid went close to putting the visitors a goal up early on but just put the first one wide of the post in the opening minutes. Only a few moments later, Reid found himself through on goal one-on-one with the keeper, who rushed out, just reaching the ball before the Latics forward.

Another chance for the opener was created by Hope minutes later, who used some trickery to knock the ball through the legs of the defender and deliver the ball into the box, however, Chorley did well to block the numerous shots flying at them as Oldham scrambled to try and finish.

After going 1-0 down to Chorley after 15 minutes, Latics kept their heads and replied quickly, with Reid doing brilliantly to take on his man before finding Mike Fondop in the box for an easy finish.

A couple of good saves from Hudson stopped Chorley from doubling their lead.

A few minutes before half time the ball finds Hope after being hit from deep, who knocks it in to Reid to make it a goal and assist for him in the first half.

Starting the second half, there are more opportunities for both sides, with the hosts smashing the ball in to the bar early on. Hudson also makes a great save on a ball which looked as if it was heading in to the far corner, keeping Latics ahead.

A couple good chances for Latics also occur at the start of this first half, namely for Alex Reid, who gets on the end of a perfectly weighted ball from Ben Tollitt, but he unfortunately doesn’t finish.

A long-range shot from Latics is parried by Urwin, however, Alex Reid is ready for the follow-up and slots his second goal of the game past the Chorley keeper.

Quickfire action, as only 4 minutes after Reid makes it 3-1, a great cross from Kitching reaches the substitute, Green, at the far post who knocks it in with his head.

Just a minute after being subbed on, Kurt Willoughby finds himself on the end of a brilliant ball in from Green, who finishes it clinically with his first touch of the match.

To round off the goalscoring, Fondop has the ball set up perfectly for him to perform an audacious volley into the bottom corner of the Chorley goal.

Latics: Hudson, Couto (Kitching, 66), Raglan, Sutton (Hogan, 66), Hobson (Chapman, 73), Hope (Green, 66), Shelton, Sheron (Lundstram, 66), Tollitt (Ward, 66), Reid (Willoughby, 73), Fondop.
