Willoughby Arrives At Boundary Park

7 June 2023

Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Kurt Willoughby from Chester on a deal until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The 25-year-old becomes David Unsworth’s second signing of the summer, adding to Latics’ list of attacking options.

Kurt joined Chester last summer, with his 20 league goals helping the Seals to the third in the National League North.

Manager, David Unsworth, was happy to secure the services of such a talented player.

"What we've got is an out and out goalscorer who scores goals for fun, he scores all types of goals and he gets in the box.

"We're obviously going to need to give him that service but any opportunity he gets he's looking to get a shot away straight away, which I love.

"And he's different from what we've got. We've got two big target men, we've got Reidy who runs in behind, we've now got a goalscorer - poacher - that we didn't have last season so he makes that department stronger as well."

Excitement continues to build ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Be part of it all by purchasing your Season Ticket online here.

Born in Blackpool, Willoughby came through the Fleetwood Town Academy, before joining non-league side Clitheroe.

His performances at Shawbridge earned him a move to FC United of Manchester, where he netted 19 goals in his debut in the sixth tier.

Two years with AFC Fylde were followed by a campaign with York City, as his tally of 11 goals helped the Minstermen win the National League North play-offs.

Willoughby joined Chester last summer, and found the net on 27 occasions, with the club narrowly missing out on promotion.

Speaking after signing his two-year-deal, Kurt admitted that he can't wait to get going in a Latics shirt.

"I'm over the moon and I'm really excited and happy to get it done so that I'm fully focused on the season ahead.

"The manager has been great, we've had really good conversations.

"First and foremost I work as hard as I can. Hard work gets you your chances, and I'll do anything for the team.

"I like to play on the shoulder, in behind, and I think my finishing is my strongest attribute that comes naturally to me."

Kurt will wear squad number 7.

Player sponsorships for 2023/24 are now available for £250+VAT. To sponsor Kurt's home or away shirt, email commercial@oldhamathletic.co.uk.
