Murray Appointed Academy Manager

8 June 2023

Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce that Paul Murray has returned to the club as Academy Manager.

Murray joined Latics as a player in December 2001, and spent two-and-a-half years at the club, helping Iain Dowie’s side reach the play-offs in 2003, before leaving for Portuguese side Beira-Mar.

He returned as coach in 2013, working under Lee Johnson, before leaving to take up the role as manager of Hartlepool United.

Since then, he’s worked as a coach for a number of clubs within first-teams and academies.

Manager, David Unsworth, was thrilled to have someone with Paul’s experience in such an important role.

“I know Paul through my time working in football, and I can’t stress what a good guy he is.

“I spoke to over ten people about him, and not one of them had a bad thing to say about him.

“He’s really passionate about working with young players, but he’s also passionate about doing what’s best for Oldham Athletic.

“The academy needs a lot of work, in the short and long-term, and Paul is key to that - he’s a vital cog in the machine.

“I’m delighted that he’s agreed to come back.”

It’s great to have Paul back at Boundary Park, as part of a summer of exciting activity.

Paul was delighted to be returning to Boundary Park, in a role he previously held between 2019 and 2021.

“I’m really pleased to be back at Oldham Athletic. I looked at the club, and the direction it’s going in, and it’s definitely going places.

“It’s really important for the young lads coming through to see that there are paths to the first team, players like Benny and Will coming through in recent years are a great piece of motivation for them.

Welcome back, Muzza!
