Latics 0-2 Boreham Wood

4 March 2023

Two late goals saw Boreham Wood take home the points after a good performance by David Unsworth’s team at Boundary Park.

Latics were the better of the sides in the first-half, Green’s pace caused Boreham Wood problems, but no clear-cut chances were created.

The away side came into the game more during the second-half, but Jack Payne’s goal still came against the run of play.

With Oldham pushing for an equaliser, Dennon Lewis made it two as the clock rolled over the 90th minute, killing the game off.

Latics started brightly, Green and Kitching caused problems down the wing, and were the source of many Latics attacks.

One of those chances, started by Green, saw him fire the ball in for John Rooney, he was just a yard too far forward to make clean contact with the ball, letting Boreham Wood off the hook.

Zak Brunt was given acres of space to run into on the edge of the area, but his shot didn’t trouble Norman, and rolled wide of the goal.

Fondop doing what Fondop does, looked to score a spectacular goal. He turned and pulled the trigger immediately, forcing Ashmore to push his effort wide of the goal.

Joe Yarney was called into action Jamal Fyfield found himself in a fantastic shooting position, Latics’ number 44 threw himself to the ground to block the shot, keeping the scores level.

Coming out in the second-half, Boreham Wood looked better and created more chances than they did in the first, but still didn’t dominate the game.

Abraham and Tollitt came on in place of Nuttall and Rooney, with 20 to play.

Timmy had an instant impact, nodding the ball on for Fondop, who had to contend with three defenders closing him down, before he got a shot away.

Nathan Sheron saw an opening in the away side’s defence and swung a cross in from out-wide, which the defence we forced to turn behind for a corner.

Jack Payne took a shot from the edge of the box which sneaked into the corner of the goal, giving his side the lead, against the run of play.

Dennon Lewis made it two moments later, with Latics throwing the kitchen sink at the goal. The initial effort was blocked on the line, but Lewis put away the rebound.
