Latics 2-1 Boreham Wood

13 February 2024

Latics got back to winning ways thanks to a 2-1 comeback against Boreham Wood.

The lively Mo Sagaf sneaked his shot in at the near post to give the visitors the lead within the first thirty minutes, but following two half-time changes, Mike Fondop slotted home Devarn Green’s pass to pull Latics level.

With the momentum firmly in Oldham’s favour, they won a free-kick, which was nodded forward by Charlie Raglan towards Joe Garner, who headed home to secure all three points.

Despite arguably being the better side during the opening moments, mostly via Mark Kitching’s superb crosses down the left, it was Boreham Wood who struck first, when Sagaf beat Hudson at his near post, with his shot creeping through the defence.

Athletic sought an equaliser, but couldn’t produce anything more than half chances for the remainder of the first-half.

Mellon opted for a change of shape and two substitutions at the break, bringing on Shaun Hobson and Devarn Green in place of Sai Sachdev and Dan Ward.

Those two factors improved Latics’ attacking output, with them looking a lot more lively as the second half progressed.

The goal which Latics deserved soon came, Green beat his man, but opted for a square pass into the box rather than a cross at the byline, finding Fondop who effortlessly poked it home with his side-footed shot.

It was that goal which forced Boreham Wood out of their shell a bit, compelling them to add a bit more attacking spice to their game, which allowed Latics to create a few more chances.

Mellon spent his third substitution with 15 minutes to go, bringing on Nathan Sheron in place of Josh Lundstram, shoring up the midfield in a vital part of the game.

Fondop, who’d caused Boreham Wood problems all evening, had his shirt pulled excessively by the aggressive Wood defence, winning Latics a free-kick in a dangerous crossing position.

Set-piece expert Tom Conlon stepped up to whip the crossing, before Raglan’s header pushed it forward, finding Garner who couldn’t miss with his header from just a few yards out.

It capped off a brilliant move and brilliant comeback for Latics, who could have extended their lead five minutes from time.

With the visitors vulnerable at the back, Oldham hit them on the break, with Green slipping a pass through for the advancing Hammond, who forced Ashmore into making a great save from close range.

Three vital points for Oldham, which move them back into the play-off places, leaving them within a point of Solihull in fifth.
