Mellon Looking For Quick Response

27 February 2024

After the defeat to Kidderminster on Saturday, manager Micky Mellon wants his players to use the quick turnaround in fixtures to get back on track as the latter part of the season approaches.

Latics travel to Eastleigh on Tuesday night for a rearranged fixture with Mellon's side currently occupying seventh position in the National League.

With a tightly-packed table in the quest for a play-off place, the manager is looking for the right response tonight.

“I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re hugely disappointed with the result at the weekend, especially when there was the opportunity to perform in front of a big crowd, on an important day," he said.

“But we are a professional team and we must move on. Tuesday evening is a new game and it represents an important chance for us to bounce back straight away.

“We very much view it as an opportunity for us to get a positive result and that's how our mindset must be as we approach the game.

“That’s all you can do after a defeat, whatever the manner, you must look to get back on track because we know just how crucial every game is at the moment.

“But we also know we’re in a process and it’s going to take time to get that consistency that we want to see.

“We will have these moments along the way, we need to learn and improve from them, and go from there.”

Eastleigh are currently in 11th place and were in a promising position around the New Year.

But a poor run of results has seen them slide down the table, and get dragged into the wide-open relegation battle.

That caused Richard Hill to lose his job, with former Southampton goalkeeper, Kelvin Davis being his replacement.

Since the 47-year-old took charge, they’ve won two from two, moving them up to mid-table.

“Any game in this league is tough, especially places like Eastleigh, they are an experienced side at thsi level and we appreciate just how tricky it can be. That is what the National League is all about.

“They’ve had a managerial change recently, which throws things into the unknown a bit, you don’t have ten of 15 games to look at per say, you’ve only got a couple.

“That aside, there’s a simple rule in football and that’s if you don’t perform, you don’t put the work in which is necessary, you don’t get your rewards.

“We need to perform to get the results, it’s as simple as that.

“Our away record, on the other hand, is very good, so that should give the lads confidence going into this game.

“But the most important thing is that we get back on track, and keep up the hunt for the play-offs.

“We're obviously in the middle of a busy run so we've had to manage the recovery of the squad recently. We've had a few bumps and bruises recently so there are a couple of things for us to look at before the game."
