Latics 1-2 Hendon

13 January 2024

Latics exited the FA trophy at the hands of Hendon.

Oldham had a number of chances throughout the game, but the visitors took the lead when Joe White slotted home from inside the box.

Norwood equalised from the spot in stoppage time, but the Dons booked their place in the next round in the 90+6th minute when Niko Muir bundled the ball over the line.

Latics were dominant for large parts of the game, especially the earlier parts, but despite lots of shots, couldn’t make it count.

Ward looked lively in the centre, creating opportunities with a few passes and looked to make one of his own, running at the defence, but couldn’t get a shot off.

Walker, making his debut for Latics, showcased his pace and flair on the wing, and put in a few crosses, but none could be turned into goals.

The best chance of the game came from a corner, and really should have allowed Micky Mellon’s side to go in at the break a goal up.

Dan Gardner’s corner was flicked on by Charlie Raglan, with Liam Hogan getting his foot to it, but failing to turn it over the line.

Athletic continued to get shots off during the second 45, but Hendon definitely came into the game more, and looked in a better position to score.

And score they did, Joe White poked home from inside the area, leaving Latics 25 minutes to find an equaliser.

Micky opted to make three changes, Mark Kitching, James Norwood, and Tom Conlon entered play in place of Liam Hogan, Kurt Willoughby and Josh Lundstram.

Hendon understandably put ten men behind the ball, and frustrated Latics for the rest of the game.

It looked as though an opportunity wouldn’t come for Oldham, but when Walker was judged to have been fouled inside the box, the referee pointed to the spot, and Norwood converted.

After that stoppage time penalty, the thoughts of most inside Boundary Park were probably on the impending penalty shootout, but after Latics failed to clear the lines from a corner, Niko Muir’s punt at goal beat Norman, sending them through to the next round.
