Latics 0-0 Bromley

5 March 2024

Latics picked up another point at home as they played out a 0-0 draw against Bromley.

Oldham had two early chances, both via Joe Garner, but couldn’t convert either.

Bromley came into the game, but the only chance of note in the first half saw Michael Cheek nod it over from inside the box.

Both sides traded shots in the second half, but neither could beat the men between the sticks, leaving them to take a point apiece.

The opening moments of the game were dominated by Latics, with two top chances being created by Sai Sachdev, for Garner.

The first saw Sai’s punt into the area deflect off the Bromley defence, falling to the feet of Garner, who instinctively shot at goal, with Smith palming it wide.

Just a few moments later, the second chance came, when Sachdev’s cross was hit first time by Garner, with Smith again being equal to it.

Michael Cheek, forever a threat in the box, read the trajectory of the ball well, but couldn’t get above it to divert it anywhere other than over the bar as he raced into the area.

Latics had a decent portion of the ball for the remainder of the first 45, but they, as well as Bromley failed to produce any clear-cut chances.

The second half continued in the same fashion as how the first ended, not an awful lot of promising chances, with both teams opting to try and slowly break down their opponents or play a long-ball forward.

Most players matched their counterparts in ability, leading to few breakthroughs.

Garner and Norwood combined well up front, showing continued signs of a promising strike partnership, but they just couldn’t find that right pass or flick-on forward.

Micky Mellon sought to freshen things up top, bringing off the recovering Norwood and workhorse Garner, for Andrew Dallas and Mike Fondop.

Both showed good properties, but like their predecessors, just couldn’t get a lucky break.

Bromley had a dominant ten-minute spell starting in the 70th minute, shooting wide, or having a number blocked, but none troubled Mat Hudson with any great difficulty.

One such chance saw Corey Whitely given the ball just inside the box in a good shooting position, just for Sachdev to dive in, taking possession off him at the last minute.

Another saw Olufela Olomola race forward as part of a counter attack, fluffing his shot from a fantastic and dangerous shooting position.

In the end, it seemed that Bromley were happy to settle for a point, and Latics just could not get past their defence.
