Supporter Information: Pyrotechnics

5 March 2024

Following an incident involving a pyrotechnic at Boundary Park on Saturday, supporters are reminded of the risks and consequences of being in possession of such devices.

At the weekend, a flare was thrown onto the pitch from the Rochdale Road End of the ground. The device was ignited from within a crowded area and one supporter in close proximity narrowly avoided serious injury as it was lit.

The club has identified the person responsible for using the pyrotechnic and the matter has been referred to Greater Manchester Police.

Being in possession of a pyrotechnic at a football match, or attempting to bring a pyrotechnic device into a stadium, is a criminal offence.

Any person committing such an offence faces arrest and can expect the Court to make a football banning order.

The club has already faced a financial penalty during the current season and has received a warning for similar incidents. If there are further occurrences such as this, we run the risk of additional punishment.

As we saw on Saturday, the use of pyrotechnics can be highly dangerous and puts the safety of supporters at risk.

Our supporters always play a hugely important role on matchdays and that is something the club values enormously. However, this must always be done legally and by ensuring the safety of all supporters.
