Aldershot 2-0 Latics

9 March 2024

Latics suffered their first league away defeat since October at the hands of Aldershot Town.

The Shots were dominant, opening the scoring when James Daly headed home inside the first half.

That continued in the second period, and after Mat Hudson saved Lorent Toraj’s penalty, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Tyler Frost ran through, finding the bottom corner.

The hosts started the game brightly, having an early chance when Ryan Glover ran down the wing, putting a ball in for Daly, who could only put it wide of the post.

Their next chance came from a free-kick, which was headed across the face of goal toward Stuart O’Keefe, who couldn’t get it under control before Latics cleared.

In the lead-up to their opener, Aldershot had another spell of chances but saw them cleared or collected by Hudson.

They eventually got their goal though, with Glover crossing it for Daly who nodded home from a central position.

Latics had a chance to equalise just before the referee’s whistle for half time, Andrew Dallas drove into the box and squared the ball to meet the run of Oli Hammond, but he was unable to convert at the far post.

Just a few minutes into the second half, the Shots had a prime opportunity to double their lead when Tolaj was slipped through by Glover.

The striker was through on goal, went past Hudson and had an empty net to shoot into, albeit at a somewhat tight angle, but due to the shot’s lack of power, Harrison McGahey was able to block it on the line, whilst on the floor, also deflecting Josh Stokes’ follow-up over the bar.

If that was a good chance, then their next was great, after Hudson was judged to have brought Tolaj down in the area.

It was he who stepped up to the spot, aiming for the bottom corner with power, but after a possible touch by Hudson, it ricocheted off the post to Latics’ relief.

Aldershot sat deep and Latics had spells of possession in the final third as they tried to break down Tommy Widdrington’s side, but resilient defending from keeper and defence alike thwarted any opportunity of a revival.

The home side added a second in stoppage time, with Frost capitalising on the fact Latics were throwing men forward, allowing him to run through and fire home a decent shot from just inside the box.
