Oldham’s penultimate game of the 2024/25 National League regular season sees a trip to Gloucester, as Latics take on Forest Green Rovers in Saturday’s 3pm fixture.

Monday’s results confirmed Oldham’s place in the play-offs, with Latics guaranteed a place in top seven. The order of those top seven positions is still undecided, with Latics currently in fourth place two points ahead of fifth-place Rochdale. FC Halifax are also not far behind, three points adrift in sixth.

Last time out it was a point on the road for Micky Mellon’s men, sharing the spoils with an in-form York City on Easter Monday. Joe Felix put the hosts in front just past the half-hour mark, before a Charlie Raglan header in the second half ended York’s five-game winning run and earned the point that made sure Latics would be competing in this season’s play-offs.

Opposition

After relegation from the EFL last season, Forest Green have secured a top three finish in the National League as they hope for an immediate return to League Two. Their third-place finish was confirmed last week, with York too far in front whist Latics are nine points behind with just two games to go.

A big win at home to Tamworth on Easter Monday put an end to a three-game winless run for FGR, which included a 3-2 home defeat to Gateshead the Saturday before last. It was back to winning ways on Monday though, with three first half goals enough for a 3-0 against the Lambs.

Key Players

The leading goalscorer for Forest Green this season is Christian Doidge. The Welshman is already considered a hero at the Gloucester club after his play-off final winner for FGR in 2017 to earn a first-ever promotion to the EFL for the club. After leaving and having spells at Bolton, Hibernian, and Kilmarnock, Doidge returned in 2024 and has 12 goals to his tally this season.

Charlie McCann is a player that Latics will have to keep an eye on, capable of controlling the game from midfield. McCan, who came through the ranks at Man United, operates as a defensive midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 setup, but is still a big threat going forward. The 23-year-old has ten goals to his name, including one last time out.

In the Dugout

Steve Cotterill is the man in the hotseat for Forest Green, after taking up the position in January 2024 with Rovers struggling at the bottom of League Two.

The former Burton Albion, Wimbledon, and Bournemouth striker began his managerial career at Ireland’s Sligo Rovers in 1996, before a five-year stint as Cheltenham Town manager from 1997. Cotterill then briefly managed Stoke City, followed by a three-year period in charge of Burnley. He then had spells in charge of Notts County, Nottingham Forest, and Portsmouth, before spending three years at Bristol City where he won the League One title and a Football League Trophy in 2015.

After his departure from the Robins, Cotterill had a year with Birmingham City before managing Shrewsbury from 2020-2023. He joined Forest Green in January 2024 but couldn’t prevent their relegation last season.
