Latics suffered their second defeat of the Sky Bet League Two season, losing 1-0 at home to Gillingham.

In what was a similar tale for Latics in terms of missed chances and being left to rue those missed opportunities.

The only goal of the game came in the second-half when experienced striker Sam Vokes wriggled away from his man to head home and gave the Gills all three points.

The opening 15 minutes were end-to-end with no real notable chances for either side.

However, it was Latics who had the first opening of the afternoon, Joe Quigley found himself at the edge of the box in space, he fired at goal but his shot was blocked for a corner.

With the clock approaching 20, from skipper Tom Conlon’s low corner, Kian Harratt flicked the ball towards goal, but unfortunately his effort trickled wide.

Latics kept the pressure on, Conlon chipped the ball wide to Luke Hannant who fired the ball into the box, but nobody was there on the end of it.

Gillingham did look dangerous when going forward, Remeao Hutton’s cross landed on the head of the dangerous Josh Andrews, but he failed to guide his effort towards target.

As both sides looked pushed for the opener, the referee sounded his whistle to end a relatively even first period.

The second-half almost started in perfect fashion for Latics, great feet from Jamie Robson allowed him to gain space for him to cross. He delivered to the back post for Harratt, he nodded towards goal to Kane Drummond who narrowly headed over.

Another chance came just moments later, Quigley received the ball inside the area and took a touch before firing at goal, but his effort was wide of the mark.

Drummond broke through with a bust of pace minutes later, laying it off to Will  Sutton who crossed it to Quigley, but his header was saved by Glenn Morris.

However, arguably against the run of play it was the visitors who took the lead. A looping corner landed on the head of substitute Vokes who nodded past Hudson to open the scoring.

Latics pushed to try and get back on level terms, Conlon's free-kick was saved well by Morris with 10 minutes left to play.

The side netting was rattled when Oli Hammond received the ball from Quigley  and fired towards goal but his effort was the wrong side of the post.

Latics pushed late on, but the Gills held firm to take all three points back to Kent with them.
