Oldham Athletic are pleased to announce the signing of Billy Waters on a deal until June 2026.

The striker joins Latics following his release from Wrexham and brings with him a wealth of experience.

This season, Waters has played in the National League for Halifax, scoring five goals in 18 games, including against Latics in the FA Cup this season.

“I’m really delighted to be here, this a club with huge ambitions and it’s a project I can really get behind,” Waters added.

“It’s a massive club so when I heard of the interest I was wanting to do it from the off.

“I’ve played against Oldham a few times and twice this season, they have a squad with real quality and I’m looking to help the lads kick on even further.

“Micky and Brabs say the squad has a real togetherness and from what I’ve seen that’s definitely the case, the lads have all been great with me.

“I’m just looking to come in and bring my experience to the group that’s already packed with it and help in whatever way I can.”

Waters, born in Epsom, began his career with Crewe Alexandra progressing through their academy. He went on to make 25 appearances scoring two goals in his time there.

On 29 June 2015, Waters joined Cheltenham Town helping to fire them to a National League title in his first season at the club.

The following campaign Waters fired in 16 goals to help preserve their Football League status as they finished 21st.

He rejected a new deal in the summer and joined Northampton Town on a three-year-contract for an undisclosed fee.

A management change early in the season hampered Waters’ chances for regular football at the Cobblers. He enjoyed loan spells at Cambridge, Cheltenham and Newport in his three year stint at the club.

Torquay were next for Billy, joining them in 2020 going on to make 28 appearances over the course of the season, scoring six goals.

Waters then enjoyed one of his most prolific campaigns at Halifax, where he scored 17 goals earning him a move to EFL side Barrow.

Nine goals in 32 games meant Wrexham came calling and bought the striker for an undisclosed fee.

However things didn’t quite click at Wrexham and he was loaned out to Doncaster and most recently back to Halifax.

Manager Micky Mellon is pleased to have acquired Billy’s services: “Billy is a player we’ve admired for a while and is a person who we feel will add to the group tremendously.

“It’s about waiting for players of Billy’s quality, he has a good pedigree and we’re looking forward to getting working with him.

“Billy wanted to come, he had options to play football elsewhere but he chose to come here and be a part of what we’re building and that’s what we want.

“It’s a challenge to come here and play for us with what we demand of the players, this club needs to be higher up and Billy emulates our thinking.

“He is hungry for success and he has all the qualities to help us all get to where we want to be.”

Billy will wear the number 18 shirt.

Welcome to the club, Billy.

Billy's transfer is subject to international clearance.
