Oldham Athletic are pleased to announce the signing of exciting young midfielder Kai Payne from Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

The talented 20-year-old arrives at Boundary Park looking to gain a valuable full season of men’s football and add something differengt to Micky Mellon’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

A product of Wigan Athletic’s academy, Payne has been tipped as a very bright prospect to have come through their youth system in recent years. 

A verstaile midfielder, he is known for his quick feet, intelligent movement, and his ability to control the tempo of the game.

Payne’s first taste of senir football came at local side Mossley, where he quickly demonstrated his potential.

In nine appearances, he scored two goals and returned to Wigan with glowing reviews for his performances and attitude.

Last season, he impressed in Wigan’s U21 setup and made several senior appearances in cup competitions, showcasing his potential at first-team level.

Payne also featured in a short loan spell for a month at Latics, making five appearances in the months of October and November 2024, gaining valuable experience in senior football and continuing his development.

In those five game, Kai impressed the Latics faithful by helping the side win three matches, including the memorable FA Cup First Round victory at Tranmere, and draw the other two.

Speaking after completing the move, Payne said: “I’m buzzing to join Oldham and really looking forward to the season ahead. 

"This is a big club with great fans, and I’m ready to work hard and help the team as much as I can.

"I want to play my part in helping this club to find that next gear and I’ll do that however I can.”

Manager Micky Mellon added: “Kai is a young player with bags of potential. 

"He gives us a different dynamic in midfield that we all saw when he was here last time.

"We’re delighted to bring him in and look forward to seeing him develop and make an impact here.”
