Latics 2-2 Shrewsbury Town
Match Reports
25 October 25
Late action at Boundary Park saw Latics being forced to share points with Shrewsbury in Saturday's afternoon fixture.
The opener came within the first minute of the second half when Anthony Scully’s effort from outside of the box bounced in the net off the crossbar.
Latics equalised swiftly through the captain Tom Pett, as his first-time effort flew past Will Brook in the Shrewsbury net.
The visitors thought they had the final blow in the 91st minute when Tommy McDermott came out on top in a scramble and fired the ball into the back of the net.
However, with just over a minute left to play in additional time, Joe Garner headed the ball past Brook to salvage a point at Boundary Park.
It was Oldham who had the first major chance of the game. In the fourth minute, a brilliant piece of link-up play between Oli Hammond and Pett saw the captain fire in a low cross into the 6-yard box, which found Mellon. Unfortunately, his effort hit the post from close range.
The crossbar denied the Latics in the 18th minute after a first-time effort from long range by Jamie Robson. A nice move saw Luke Hannant lay the ball back into Robson's path, who fired an effort from distance which bounced off the woodwork for the second time in the half.
Mellon almost found the opener in the 35th minute. A picked up loose ball in the midfield started an Oldham counterattack which found its way to Jake Caprice; his cross from the right side found Mellon in the box, who could only find the post.
The visitors started off the second in perfect fashion after Scully collected the ball on the edge of the box and fired a shot at goal which clipped the underside of the bar to open the scoring.
Latics responded quickly to the visitors' opener when Robson laid the ball off to Pett, who fired the ball first time past Will Brook in net to level the scoring.
A big chance was missed for Oldham minutes after the leveller when Joe Garner dispossessed Brook in the corner and whipped a cross into a dangerous area; unfortunately for the Latics, Pett wasn't able to make up ground and Will Boyle cleared it away.
Moments later, Shrewsbury had a chance to take back the lead when Ismeal Kabia played in Scully, who dragged his shot just wide of the far post.
A scramble in the box in the 84th minute saw the visitors receive a loose ball off a block by Manny Monthe, which fell for Sam Clucas, who fired his shot wide.
Shrewsbury had thought they won the game at the death when McDermott won the scramble in the box to fire the ball past Mathew Hudson in the 91st minute.
With seconds left to play, a dangerous curling cross was played into the box and found Garner at the back post, who nodded the ball into the back of the net to equalise late on.
One final corner by Oldham was frantically cleared away as the referee blew for full time.
