Ebbrell started his playing career at Everton in the 1986, and was a regular at Goodison Park during the first half of the 1990s, being part of the side that won the FA Cup in 1995 alongside Unsworth.

Howard Kendall took the midfielder to Sheffield United in 1997, but his time at Bramall Lane was marked by injury before being forced to retire aged just 29.

John then took up the role of Chief Scout at Everton and later oversaw Tranmere Rovers’ Centre of Excellence, before returning to Everton in 2015.

After holding a number of roles in the academy, he was promoted to assistant manager of Everton U23s, under David Unsworth, working with him in that capacity for six years.
