Kai joins Latics ahead of the 2025/26 season after playing at Boundary Park last season.

On loan from Wigan Athletic; Payne has claimed he is a: “young lad who is hungry to get out there and play” and this statement is reflected in his style of play. Payne began his career at Liverpool's’ academy until the age of 13, where he joined Wigan Athletic following a successful trial with the club.

He put pen to paper in November 2022 with Wigan while in the second year of his scholarship with the club. To gain some experience, Payne was sent out on loan to local outfit Mossley, making 9 appearances and finding the back of the net on two occasions; becoming a popular figure with the fans of the Lilywhites.

His senior debut came in a league cup game vs Tranmere in November 2023. His league debut came as a substitute appearance against Southern side Crawley Town, seeing out a 1-0 win for Wigan.

The young midfielder is impressing fans with consistent performances, bossing the midfield and taking control of games.
