Rhys Murphy Aims High

6 February 2015

New signing Rhys Murphy revealed the ambition of the club was what swayed his decision to join the club.

The striker signed in the final minutes of the January transfer window from League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge.

Speaking in his first interview as an Oldham Athletic player, he admitted the influence of manager Lee Johnson in his decision to sign for the club.

Murphy said: "I'm an ambitious player and that's one of the reasons why I signed. When I spoke to the manager, he is just as ambitious and hungry as I am and he's got a squad to match so it was a good match for me.

"I want to come here and score goals in this league and hopefully get the club promoted. If not this season, then we go again next season and really push for promotion.

The 24-year-old came through the ranks at Arsenal in the same side as Wojciech Szczęsny, Francis Coquelin and Henri Lansbury and believes he has the ability to fire Latics into the Championship.

"As a striker, the main thing is to score goals so hopefully that's what I'll bring to the team," commented Murphy.

"I like to think I've got a bit more to my game. I have good movement, intelligent and hopefully I can create a couple of goals for other players as well.

"I like to get into the pockets, drop off and play on defender's shoulders. I like to mix my game up and hopefully I can show that as soon as possible."

Unfortunately tomorrow's game might be too soon for the striker but could feature against Swindon Town on Tuesday.

"I did have a little niggle from last week," said the 24-year-old. "I've been with the physio and making sure everything is right so Saturday might be a day or two too soon but I should be ready for Tuesday."
