Altrincham 1-1 Latics
First Team
31 August 24
Latics were forced to settle for point at the J Davidson Stadium, after Altrincham came from behind in the second half to end the game all square.
Micky Mellon’s side were looking to avenge the fixture on Bank Holiday Monday where they felt they could have had more in the 1-1 draw against Gateshead.
The visitors started the game on the ascendancy, taking the game to Altrincham. Tom Conlon had a strike on the half volley saved well by Ethan Ross in opening stages.
We continued to put pressure on the hosts with Reagan Ogle’s long throw causing havoc. Charlie Raglan headed just over after a scramble in the box.
Their pressure was then rewarded on the 24th minute as good work from Harry Charsley on the right hand side resulted in him taking possession from the Altrincham defender. He played the ball to Dan Gardner who squared it for James Norwood and the striker made no mistake, firing home to put Latics ahead.
The hosts grew into the game after the set back and took the game to Latics, but the visitors had another golden chance just before the interval. Charsley playing in Norwood whose shot was heading goalwards only to be cleared off the line.
Just before the whistle Altrincham had one clear off the line themselves, Charlie Raglan got back to save Latics’ blushes as Jake Bickerstaff looked to have levelled the scores.
After the interval, the game was fairly contested with no clear cut chances for either side. Mellon tried to freshen the game up in the 60th minute with a triple change. Mark Kitching, Mike Fondop and Callum Dolan came into the fray.
Dolan was involved straight away, he received the ball in the box and fired a snapshot at Ross forcing him to parry into the box, the rebound fell to Fondop but he fired over.
In the 69th minute Altrincham won a free-kick on the right hand side of the pitch. Alex Newby delivered a low ball into the box which was met by Regan Linney who headed home to bring the scores level.
The game looked to be fizzling out for a share of the spoils, until the last minute when Fondop won the ball and was in one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, his shot was saved superbly by Ross in the Altrincham goal and the referee blew the whistle meaning Latics take a point back to Boundary Park.
