Oldham Athletic are pleased to announce the signing of Matt Worthington from Yeovil Town on a deal until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Matt joins the club on a free transfer after making 22 appearances for the Glovers this campaign.

The 27-year-old joins with lots of National League pedigree, making 250 appearances for Yeovil in his six year stint at the club.

“When I was presented with the chance to join, it was something I couldn’t turn down,” he said.

“The move came about very quickly to be honest, I found out yesterday it could get done so I headed up here this morning to get it done.

“I’m at a good age, I’ve played a lot of games at the level for Yeovil, when Oldham come in and showed interest it was something I had to get done.

“I’m an aggressive midfielder, box-to-box, I like to get around the pitch and get on the ball.

“I’m all action and I want to show what I’m about, there’s competition for places and that’s what you want, there’s some good quality in the middle of the park and hopefully I can add to that.”

Born in Southampton, the midfielder’s youth career was based on the South Coast. Portsmouth is where he started before moving on to Southampton and then to Bournemouth in 2011, where he spent eight years.

He was loaned to Eastbourne Borough in 2016 to gain some experience in the men’s game before joining Yeovil in 2017, helping them to survive in League Two.

Another loan followed but this time it was at Forest Green Rovers. He made nine appearances , scoring one goal as they made the play-offs.

Worthington impressed during his time out on loan and after his Eastbourne spell in 2016 he returned to Bournemouth where he made his Premier League debut, coming on as a 74th minute substitute in a 1-1 draw at Leicester City.

In the January transfer window in 2019, Yeovil Town, a side familiar with Matt then signed him on a free transfer.

He signed an 18-month-deal and instantly became a fans favourite.

Matt has gone on to make 250 appearances for the Glovers, he was made club captain and was one of the first names on the team sheet for Mark Cooper.

On his arrival Micky Mellon said: “The midfield is an area that’s very important to us and we’ve been able to get a leader and a captain in which I’m thrilled about.

“He can play in multiple positions, he’s a good age and he’s happy to be here so it’s all boxes ticked.

“You have to be patient for good players, we don’t want to rush into anything, players like Matt are hard to find.

“We’re delighted he’s come here and the fact he’s so keen is a key sign to me that he’s a player with the qualities I want.

“Recruitment is always an ongoing thing and if we feel a player will strengthen us going forward then we’ll work hard to make that possible.”

Matt will wear the number 22 shirt.

Welcome to the club, Matt!
