Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce that midfielder Tom Pett has signed a two-year deal with the club, effective from the expiry of his Cheltenham contract on 1 July.

The 33-year-old returns to Boundary Park following an impressive loan spell during the second half of last season. Pett made 24 appearances in all competitions, playing a key role in the heart of midfield as Latics secured promotion back to the EFL via the play-offs.

A composed and intelligent presence, Pett’s influence grew quickly after his arrival in January. His calmness in possession, tactical discipline, and ability to dictate the tempo of matches was key during a crucial run of fixtures.

Pett quickly became an integral part of Micky Mellon’s side. His leadership qualities and experience were very evident, making him a clear fans favourite from the off.

Originally from Hertfordshire, Pett began his footballing journey in non-league football with Potters Bar Town and Wealdstone. His performances soon earned him a move into the professional ranks with Stevenage in 2014. Over the next few years, he established himself as a consistent and reliable figure in League Two.

In 2018, Pett made the switch to Lincoln City, where he enjoyed one of the most successful spells of his career. Under manager Danny Cowley, he played a significant role in the Imps' League Two title-winning campaign during the 2018/19 season.

After leaving Lincoln, he returned to Stevenage for a second stint before joining Port Vale in 2021. At Vale Park, Pett added another promotion to his CV, helping the club win the League Two play-offs in 2022 alongside captain Tom Conlon, Kian Harratt and Harry Charsley.

Across a career that has spanned more than a decade, Pett has made over 300 senior appearances in the EFL and National League.

After joining Oldham on loan in January 2025, Pett slotted seamlessly into the side, offering consistency and a calm head as Latics pushed for a play-off finish.

His return now provides further stability and experience ahead of the club’s return to League Two, with Pett expected to play a pivotal role both on and off the pitch in the upcoming campaign.

Speaking after signing permanently, Pett said: “I really enjoyed my time here last season. From the moment I arrived, I felt settled and part of something.

"The dressing room has a great atmosphere, and the fans have been brilliant with me. It was an easy decision to come back.

“I think we can achieve great things together this season it’s a great place and really it was a no brainer to sign for another two years.

"I believe in what the manager and his staff are building here and I really want to be part of it.”

Manager Micky Mellon added: “Tom was a big influence for us when he came in last season. He brought real composure and intelligence into our midfield, and his attitude on and off the pitch was spot on.

“He’s a great lad who knows the group well, so when we had the chance to bring him here permanently it was one I knew we had to take.

"He knows what this level is about, and he’ll be an important part of the group as we look to keep progressing. We’re really pleased to have him back on board.”

Welcome back, Tom!
