Simeu Extends Latics Stay
First Team
9 January 26
Defender Dynel Simeu has extended his stay at Latics, signing a new deal that will keep him at Boundary Park until 30 June.
The 23-year-old has put pen to paper after making six appearances for the club so far, most recently playing the full 90 minutes in the goalless draw with Grimsby Town on Boxing Day.
A highly regarded centre-back, Simeu began his youth career at Chelsea before returning to his hometown club in 2021, when Southampton secured his signature for a reported substantial fee.
Highly rated at the time, Simeu spent three years with the Saints, featuring regularly for their Under-23 side and making 15 appearances. Prior to that, he represented Chelsea’s Under-23s on 25 occasions, further underlining his pedigree at academy level.
He has since gained valuable senior experience through a number of loan spells, featuring 18 times for Carlisle United, 17 times for Tranmere Rovers, scoring once and made 18 outings for Morecambe in League One.
Before arriving at Latics, Simeu also enjoyed a spell abroad with Albanian side Teuta, where he made 15 appearances and gained further experience at first-team level.

On extending his deal, Simeu said: “I’m really happy to be staying here.
"From the moment I came in, I felt welcomed by the staff, the players and the supporters.
“I feel like I’ve got a lot more to show and I want to prove what I can bring to this team.
"I’m excited to keep working hard and help the club push on.”
Manager Micky Mellon added: “Dynel is a player we really believe in. He’s got great physical attributes, a good footballing brain and a real desire to improve.
“This extension gives him the platform to keep developing and pushing himself.
"We’re pleased to have him with us.”
Congratulations, Dynel!
