Latics vs. Dag & Red

7 February 2023

Latics play their second of four consecutive home games against Dagenham & Redbridge.

David Unsworth’s side will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat to Halifax Town.

The opposition

Managed by Daryl McMahon, the Daggers sit two points off the play-offs, having lost three of their last five.

McMahon’s side narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, finishing a point behind Chesterfield who occupied the final play-off position.

Dagenham’s Last Six

Wealdstone 1-0 Dag & Red

Dag & Red 0-2 Yeovil Town

Bromley 1-1 Dag & Red

Dag & Red 0-2 Maidenhead United

Aldershot 0-2 Dag & Red

Dag & Red 1-2 Woking

Watch out for

Winger Myles Weston is a dangerous option down the right hand side for Dagenham.

The 34-year-old is known for his excellent dribbling and crossing ability, and has six assists to his name this season.

In the dugout

Daryl McMahon has been at the helm since the beginning of 2020, and has overseen an improvement season-by-season, although there are concerns amongst fans of his team’s consistency, with great winning runs often being followed by a run of consecutive losses.

Prior to moving to Victoria Riad, the Irishman was managed of Macclesfield town and Ebbsfleet United.

Match officials

The referee is Aaron Bannister, with Scott Tayllor and Martin Parker running the lines. Michael Trevethan will be the fourth official.

Match Reports

Latics 4-2 Dag & Red

7 February 2023

Latics came from a goal down to beat Dagenham & Redbridge 4-2, in a game which included two penalties.

Latics started the game well, but went behind when Junior Morais finished from inside the box, following a series of blocks in front of goal.

Oldham turned the game on its head in just a few minutes, Nathan Sheron struck a sweet strike from outside the box, and Josef Yarney headed home from a corner to give Latics the lead.

Dagenham looked to have salvaged a point as the 90th minute approached, as Matt Robinson capitalised on a Norman mistake inside the box.

That wasn’t the end of the game though, Angelo Balanta handled the ball in the box, and Joe Nuttall stepped up to fire the penalty past Justham.

As the Daggers looked for another equaliser, Latics hit them on the counter, and Ellis Chapman finished off the move with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box.

Oldham looked good in the opening minutes, with John Rooney showing his true quality in a number of early moves.

Mark Shelton was forced off after 15 minutes due to an injury, with Dan Gardner coming on in his place.

Dagenham scored, against the general run of play, with Morais beating Norman following a number of blocked shots.

That goal, and Shelton’s injury disrupted Latics’ flow, and they were unable to do much during the remainder of first-half.

Oldham looked a lot better as the second-half kicked-off, and they were rewarded when the ball fell to Sheron outside the box, firing home a shot which flew through all the bodies in the box.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors, Yarney headed towards goal from Tollitt’s corner, with John Rooney bundling the ball over the line.

Nuttall had the opportunity to double Latics’ lead from the penalty spot, but Elliot Justham was equal to it.

Tollitt was instrumental in a number of Latics attacks, cutting in from the left and having shots, in addition to creating chances for Nuttall.

Norman dropped Myles Weston’s corner with a few minutes to go, before Robinson got the final touch as the ball went over the line.

Latics got another penalty, this time for a handball in the box, Nuttall stepped up again, confidently firing the ball past Justham, as the clock ticked over the 90-minute mark.

As Dagenham threw the kitchen sink at the game, Oldham pounced, and launched a counter-attack, Chapman was found on the left, and found the bottom corner with a superb strike.

Latics: Norman, Hogan, Sheron, Shelton (Gardner, 15), Rooney (Chapman 90+3), Tollitt, Reid (Abraham, 76), Kitching, Sutton, Yarney, Nuttall.

Subs not used: Hudson, P. Clarke.

Attendance: 5,100 (35)
