Men against boys as reserves lose

Latics reserves suffered a hefty 4-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town in their opening game of the season in Central League, West Division.

It was a case of men against boys as the Shrews used their superior experience to their advantage against Latics' youthful starting line up which included three scholars.

Indeed, Latics would have lost by a wider margin but for Aussie keeper Liam Jacob who made a number of important saves.

Latics, who found themselves 3-0 down at the break, made two changes at the restart as Chris Sutherland and Danny Gosset, two further trainees, were brought on.

It remained one-way traffic in the second period as the Shrews missed a number of further chances before adding a fourth goal just short of the hour.

Ryan Doble's neat pass released Tom Bradshaw who shot low to the right of Jacob.

The Shews would have added a fifth goal but for Jacob who made two acrobatic saves to deny Bradshaw and Jon Taylor while Tomos Jones made a goalline clearance to keep out Elliott Turner's strike.

Full-time: Shrewsbury Town reserves 4, Latics reserves 0.
