Latics up for the challenge

Youngsters in cup action

Latics under-18's are up for the challenge of trying to cause an upset in the second round of the FA Youth Cup.

Coventry City visit Boundary Park tomorrow (Wednesday) for a tie which kicks off at 7pm.

The Sky Blues, a club with Academy status, ought to be favourites as Latics only have a Centre of Excellence.

Latics beat Accrington Stanley in the first round and Head of Youth Tony Philliskirk (pictured) said: "This will be going up a notch against a very good Academy side.

"We will give it our best shot and it is a game we are looking forward to."

Latics will be up against it as they will again have a depleted side.

Joe Cooper, Michael Brewster, Haydn Foulds and Will Kinder are injured, John Pritchard and Luke Simpson injury doubts, Danny Byrnes away with Wales under-16's and Tomos Jones one day too old to play.

Philliskirk will also have to wait to see if Chris Sutherland, who is in the first-team squad for tonight's league game at Hartlepool United, is available tomorrow night.

Latics under-18's were also short on numbers on Saturday when they inflicted a first defeat of the season on Wrexham in the Football League Youth Alliance's North West Conference.

Philliskirk said: "We showed real determination in the wake of adversity against the only unbeaten team in our league on Saturday.

"That win, achieved with a threadbare team, has given us confidence and belief for tomorrow's match.

"We will have the same group of players tomorrow. We will be positive and not feel sorry for ourselves."

Admission prices tomorrow will be £4 for adults and £2 concessions. Only the Main Stand will be open.
