Taylor made for Latics

30 November 2012

Hat-trick hero's knock at the door

Daniel Taylor is hoping the hat trick he scored for Latics' reserves in midweek will help catapult him back into the first-team spotlight.

The 19-year-old striker (pictured) says he is "desperate" to get back on to the pitch and believes his goals will be a timely reminder to manager Paul Dickov as to what he can do.

He said: "Hopefully it is knock on the gaffer's door and show him I am ready to play.

"I know when the chance comes, I am ready to take it."

Taylor, signed in the summer after being released by Newcastle United, has made only two appearances.

They were both as a substitute in the opening two league games of the season against Milton Keynes Dons and Walsall.

Taylor, who says he has settled well at Boundary Park, said: "I have not been playing and am desperate to get on to the pitch.

"I didn't expect to walk into the side and knew I would have to fight for a place.

"May be I expected to be playing more than I have been doing. I am just waiting for my chances and, when it comes, I am ready to take it."

Taylor added he became a victim of Latics' poor start to the season which resulted in Matt Derbyshire being brought in on loan from Nottingham Forest.

"Since Matt has come in, he has done really well and given his experience it has been hard to push past him," he continued.

And in the two games he played, Taylor said it is hard to make an impact coming off the bench. He believes he would have done better had he been given the opportunity to start games.

Dickov says he was delighted with Taylor's goalscoring exploits in midweek.

He explained: "He has had a tough time settling since he joined us and the one thing he has needed is a goal.

"To get three was great and will give his confidence a massive boost.

"Like big Matt Smith last year, he is work in progress and we are working hard with him.

"He has had a big change lifestyle wise for a kid. Slowly but surely he is getting there."
