Ladies team loses to Uppermill

Oldham Athletic Ladies team were knocked out of the Greater Manchester Women's League, Open Age League Cup at the first hurdle following a 5-1 defeat after extra time at Uppermill FC.

The first half was dominated at times by Latics and an early chance from Ginny Bennett went begging, the first of many chances.

It wasn’t all Latics, though, as goalkeeper Dominique Marshall made two excellent fingertip saves to keep Uppermill at bay.

Latics finally made the breakthrough early in the second half when Anna Allport beat a defender and chipped the 'keeper.

Instead of pushing home their advantage, Latics took their foot off the gas and Uppermill began to go forward with more purpose and they equalised with two minutes left.

Latics' heads went down and, though they held out for 13 minutes of extra time, two Uppermill goals in a minute sealed the result. Two more goals in the second period followed.

To complete their misery, Kim Shaw was shown a red card after the final whistle.

The 5-1 defeat was not a fair reflection of the game and flattered Uppermill.

It is back to league action on Sunday when Latics take on Curzon Ashton at Chapel Road, kick off 1.15pm.

Oldham: Dominique Marshall, Sarah Mullin, Cheredith Green, Nicole Brien, Kim Shaw, Yasmin Deane, Shelby Newton, Gemma Smith, Sophie Neal, Ginny Bennett, Anna Allport. Sub Morgan Leech
