Cup exit for Latics

Latics' reserves suffered a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United in the semi-final of the Lancashire Senior Cup.

First-half goals from Tom Lawrence and Gyliano Van Velzen and a second-half strike from Mats Daehli helped the Reds record an emphatic victory.

And the goal scored by substitute Carlton McIntosh (pictured) with four minutes left proved no more than a consolation.

Latics, 2-0 down at the break, again found themselves on the retreat in the second period.

Keeper Joel Coleman pulled off decent saves to deny Daehli and Lawrence.

Norwegian Daehli extended United's lead  midway through the half when he cut in from the left and fired high past Coleman.

United had chances to pull further clear as Lawrence and Van Velzen were both denied by Coleman while James Wilson blazed over when well placed.

Latics scored a consolation goal four minutes from time when United keeper Sam Johnstone could only parry a shot from John Pritchard and McIntosh scrambled home the reound.

United ought to have added a fourth goal at the death when substitute James Wilson burst clean through only to shoot wide.

Full-time: Manchester United reserves 3, Latics reserves 1.
