New boy excites Johnson

Manager's coup as Kusunga signs

Lee Johnson is hoping deadline-day transfer Genseric Kusunga is the final piece of the Latics jigsaw.

Latics manager believes he has landed a top-quality defender as the 25-year-old Kusunga (pictured) has played in the Champions League for FC Basel as well as international football for Angola.

Johnson said: "It shows what a good education Genseric has had because any team which plays in the Champions League has to be a top club.

"He is comfortable on the ball, mobile, quick to read things and a clever footballer.

"I watched videos of Genseric and have also seen him in training and can see his pedigree. I am excited and looking forward to working with him

Latics' manager added that Kusunga is another versatile player. Though recognised as a central defender, he can also play right back or holding midfield.

Johnson pointed out the sale of Jose Baxter has enabled him to strengthen the squad by bringing in Kusunga, Italian Matteo Lanzoni, Albert Rusnak and Danny Philliskirk.

He added that his goal has been to create competition in all areas, something he believes he has achieved.

Johnson admitted that the problem confronting him is keeping all his players happy.
