Fondop Signs New Contract

17 January 2023

We are pleased to confirm that Mike Fondop has agreed a new contract with the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The 29-year-old, who joined Latics 12 months ago from Hartlepool United, pens a new deal on the back of his hat-trick in the recent league win at Dorking.

Fondop, whose former clubs include Wrexham, Chesterfield and Burton Albion, has scored eight goals for Latics so far this season.

“I’m delighted that Mike has agreed a new contract,” said manager David Unsworth.

“He's been scoring goals this season and on his day he's a real handful. He's a great lad and I'm really happy for him and I hope he can carry on his goalscoring form.

"It's a reward for hard work, sticking at it, staying with us, playing and starting probably more games than he's done in a while and wanting to be on the journey together and be here for the long term

“That's what I want, I'm desperate for more players like Mike that are desperate to be here. That's all a manager can ask for."

Having joined the club midway through last season, Fondop scored twice in the draw at Newport County, but his campaign was curtailed by injury.

He got off the mark this season by scoring as a substitute in the win over Eastleigh, and his goals other this campaign have included a dramatic late equaliser in the FA Cup replay at Chester and a strike in the win over Yeovil, before his hat-trick to secure maximum points in the last league game.

“I’m very pleased to have agreed a new contract with the club,” Fondop said.

“I want to help the club get back to where it’s got to be, which is in the Football League, so signing a long-term contract means I’m going to give everything to help make that happen.

“I’ve been quite happy with how things have been going recently on a personal level but as a team we know we’ve got to do better and hopefully we’ve started to turn things around.

“I’ve got a good relationship with the fans and I’d like to thank them for the support they’ve always given me. My hat-trick last week was my first in senior football and to have scored it for Oldham means a lot to me.”
