MATCH PREVIEW: Morecambe FC vs. Oldham Athletic

24 August 2018

Oldham Athletic travel to the Globe Arena this Saturday afternoon to take on Morecambe FC (3pm kick off).

Latics go into the game unbeaten in three games after Tuesday’s draw with Yeovil Town where as the hosts claimed their first points of the season after beating Northampton Town midweek.

This will be the first league meeting between the sides, however there was a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy fixture between the sides in 2009 which Morecambe won on penalties.

Manager Frankie Bunn believes his side can get momentum going after beginning the season with key players missing.

“I think we're getting better each week, we had a team in mind during pre-season which ran really well then we picked up a few injuries at the worst time 24 hours before a game.”

“That wasn't easy to deal with, but we’ve come through that period now and we're better for it.”

Latics will still be without Sam Surridge, Cameron Dummigan and Ousmane Fane out injured and Giles Coke faces a late fitness test to see if he has recovered in time.

Callum Lang could feature against The Shrimps, the club he was on loan at last season.

Morecambe will be looking to extend on their win over Northampton, but they will have to do it without the experienced goalkeeper Barry Roche who was sent off in that game.

New signing AJ Leitch-Smith got the only goal as Morecambe held on for the victory after Roche was sent off with five minutes to go.

Oldham are priced at 5/4 with Sky Bet to beat Morecambe tomorrow afternoon.

Sam Rosbottom and Roy Butterworth will be on commentary on iFollow Latics for supporters who cannot make the game.

MATCH REPORT: Latics Claim First Away Win At Morecambe FC

25 August 2018

Two quick fire first half goals from Chris O’Grady and Gevaro Nepomuceno handed Latics the three points at the Globe Arena.

It was a quiet start to the game with both defences seemingly in charge of the contest.

Morecambe had the first chance after a quick free kick caught out Latics, but Rhys Oates could only find the side netting when released into the box.

The game suddenly came to life after Oldham scored two goals in as many minutes through O’Grady and Nepomuceno.

Morecambe couldn’t defend a Rob Hunt ball in from the right and O’Grady volleyed home past Mark Halstead in the hosts’ goal.

The same build from Oldham worked a minute later as Hunt’s ball was headed up into the air by Zak Mills and Nepomuceno reacted quickest to smash it into the net.

Morecambe almost halved the deficit as Josef Yarney rose highest from a corner, but Daniel Iversen saved brilliantly low to his right.

Latics had to dig deep in the second half and Frankie Bunn was thankful for the form of Iversen in goal.

Liam Mandeville cut inside from the left and forced another great save from the Dane, diving to his left.

Oldham almost had a third when an Andy Taylor freekick whipped in from the right which resulted in a goalmouth scramble, but somehow it ended up cleared away when it looked set to be a goal.

A-Jay Leitch-Smith found himself one on one moments later after a mistake from Peter Clarke, but Iversen spread himself well to deny the striker.

Then came the moment of the game and an unbelievable piece of goalkeeping from Iversen.

The ball came in from the left onto the head of substitute Kevin Ellison about two yards out and Iversen somehow manged to tip it away low to his right to the astonishment of the Morecambe fans.

Latics managed to hold on to take all three points and extend the unbeaten run to four games.
